In 2013, I etched this little thrift store mirror as a one-off in my studio. Simple and uplifting, it followed shortly by a flea market find - a vintage brass compact, with a little square mirror. I planned on different text for each item, but "You Got This" is the perfect message for a compact.
Discrete and personal, the compact carries history with it. Its very existence allows for the time to 'powder one’s nose' - an excuse to regroup, and pause. Slip the compact out, read the mantra, and find yourself in those words - your own reflection.
This transference from reading text (left brain) to recognizing faces (right brain) has been shown to help the brain process stress and trauma in EMDR therapy. It is a grand hope that the You Got This compact, though obviously not a clinical treatment, can work to alleviate stress for its owner. Acting as an opening into a self-assuring world where “You GOT This.” Because you do.
